For teens and adult learners, 60-minute lessons are recommended, although 45-minute lessons are acceptable.

School-aged children may begin with a 30-minute or 45-minute lesson until an hour lesson is recommended, based on their rate of progress, attention span and skill level (typically around age 8).

Very young students (typically ages 4-6) will have a 30-minute lesson. Lessons for this age range incorporate a multitude of hands-on activities as well as time at the piano to keep them engaged, learning, and - most importantly - having fun! Students can expect to learn rhythms, note reading, musical terminology, simple songs, melodies and theory. At each lesson, students will be challenged with something new and end with something fun.

Supplemental activities for young children and those with special needs include:

  • Physical movement
  • Rhythm exercises and rhythm sticks
  • Games
  • Note drills with tangible manipulatives
  • Drawing and whiteboard work
  • And more

As young students progress, more material such as technical exercises and sight reading will be introduced as appropriate.

Students with Special Needs: I have experience working with special needs students, ranging from autism and ADHD to anxiety, learning disabilities, and more. Please call to discuss your or your child's specific needs so we can customize a learning plan that best serves you.

"There is music in every child. The teacher's job is to find it and nurture it." -Frances Clark

Did You Know?

Sight reading is the ability to play something you've never seen before. Did you know that sight reading is actually a separate skill that requires daily practice apart from current pieces? My goal is to make sight reading simple and natural from the start - just like reading this text - which is why I incorporate the practice and assessment of sight reading into each lesson.

Practice is something we know we must do to learn piano. But did you know that productive practice is a learned skill? Deliberate practice is a must - from techniques for building finger strength, speed, and dexterity, to how much focus/time we give per assignment. At your lessons each week, I will show you how to organize your practice time in order to gain the most progress between lessons.
